I studied Computer Science and Medicine at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and at the SUNY Stony Brook. In January 1997, I received my M.S. (Dipl. Inf.) in Computer Science from the Institut für Mathematische Maschinen und Datenverarbeitung (Dept. of Computer Science) of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany and in 2001 my PhD in computer science from the Wilhelm-Schickard-Institute for Computer Science, of the University of Tübingen. In 2005, I completed by habilitation and received the Venia legendi of the Faculty of Information and Cognitive Sciences of the University of Tübingen.
From 2003 to 2006, I was head of Visual Computing for Medicine, a joined research group of the University Hospital Tübingen and the Computer Graphics Lab of the University of Tübingen.

Since January 2007, I am Professor for Computer-assisted Surgery at the University of Leipzig, being part of the ICCAS research center, leading the group on visual computing.

My research interests are in
